Its an automatic trany 2000 mazda 626 the overdrive light has been flashing on and off on the dash for about 3 weeks and I don't know what it is.

if the fluid is brown and smells like its burnt then your transmission needs to be replaced. if not the the linkage is stuck or damaged try spraying the linkage with a good lubricant

I had the same problem with my car. it was a maxima the mechanic said it was a transmission problem.
ps there is a switch for the overdrive light, usually near the gear shift.
