the placenta stores all the nutrients to feed the baby. the umbilical cord is like a feeding tube until the baby is born and can eat from a bottle.

The placenta is what protects the baby while in the womb (uterus) and also feeds the baby nutrients and oxygenated blood.

The placenta's purpose is to cater to the babies needs/ nourishment ie, vitamins (food), oygen, removal of waste. It's pretty much the baby's life force aside from you! With all the questions you have asked you really should get a book and read (even if this is just for reasearch purposes).
