i have a 2005 honda civic that i got july 05. this car hardly sees the freeway, and it just made 9,000 miles. i took it for a 50 mile trip a month ago and since then the engine light has been on. i took it to get the oil changed and it still comes on. should i take it to get serviced at the dealer?

First of all is it the check engine light, which looks like a small picture of an engine or will say check engine, or is it the maint req light which is just a light to remind you to get the oil changed?

If it is the check engine light you should go back to the dealer and ask if they are going to check and fix it for free. They should with that low a mileage.

If it is the maint req light you just have to push and hold the trip odometer button then turn your key to the on position (don't start it). Hold it for about 10 seconds and the light will start to flash then it should go out. You can release the button when it starts flashing. This procedure should be in your owners manual.

Do NOT try to clear codes by removing your battery cable on any car newer than a 95. You can do things like lock up your radio if it has theft deterrent built into it and it will not clear the codes anyways.

start by checking maintenance manual in glove box , more or less it could be a sculdeled maintenance coming up at 10k miles or just a bad sensor somewhere in the car the cars manufacture warranty will cover alot up to 30k and some warranty's go up to 50k emissions check book first and if no answer foeforund contact local dealership service and make an appointment fo engine light don't try to ex plain what's going on because we don't listen we just tell you to bring it down we have to see it. try it ....

most dealers have what is called a diagnostics machine, they charge a lot so ask before they hook it up. it gives you a code and you look it up in a book and tells you what exactly is wrong. be careful some dealers charge a couple hundred bucks just to hook up the machine.
