I noticed on NFL.com that Chicago has clinched not only the division but a first round bye. My SD Chargers have the playoff division but have yet to get that first round bye week. How does that happen if it hasn't already?

How come Indy has yet to win their division?

To clinch a first week bye, a team has to (1) win their particular division and (2) be among the top two best records among division winners.

Chicago got it by winning their division and automatically having the best record in the NFC

The Chargers have the best record right now, but so many teams are closer to them in total wins, that it will take one more week, or even the last game of the season to truly determine who get the first round bye.

Indy is only two games ahead of Jax, with two games to go. Conceivably, they could finish with a tie. My opinion is, as bad as Indy has been playing, they will rebound and win the division

To clinch the divison a team needs to be a certain amount of games ahead(out of reach) of all the other teams in the divison and to secure a first week bye is to be a have a better divison/confrence record than the other teams as well as a better overall record.

the bears got a first round bye bcuz they got the best record in the nfc rite now...even if they were to lose the rest of the games there are still no other team in the nfc that will be able to catch up to them and their record

the reason the chargers have not got the first round bye yet is that the race for it is still close with the colts down with one game only

however i can guranteed you that the chargers will get that first round bye in the afc...the colts are not a good team in my oppinion...i believe the chargers will dominate

Indy hasn't won their division because the Jaguars can still win it.

The teams with the best two records in each conference get first week byes in the playoffs.

Dolphins still in it baby. @ Florida Fan: we're TIED for first, not in first, big difference there, but with the ravens loss to steelers this week it opens up the wild card also.
