The desktop processor on the market right now is tha quadcore from intel(QX6700). I personally would wait for the amd quad core cpu because it has whole new architecture that is technologically amazing. It will allow for greater speed than any cpu out right now. The new amd quad core will be released mid 2007. It has a new technology which allows you to add up to 4 more additional cpus. These extra cpus will be available to add to the amd quad core in early 2008. You should also look at a new graphics card for even better performance. It will cost you a lot of money.

That depends on your motherboard. The best CPU right now is the Intel Quad Core processor but i don't think your motherboard will be able to support it. The best you can hope for is the Intel Dual Core.

Really depends on what you want it for there partner. Heres one for 5 grand. http://www.computergiants.com/items/one_item.asp?part=120856&aff=2 its a intel xeon if you know what that is.
but if you needed something more practical for home and you want a higher end cpu say less than a thousand try this one.
https://shop.sanmicro.com/splashPage.hg Next-Generation AMD Opteron. It will be better than anything any of your friends could imagine having.

all the newer ones are good, but keep in mind they wont do as good if you dont upgrade other hardware. and keep in mind your system will have to be reinstalled.
