There were 150 Pokemons in the TV series, but in Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Red for the Game Boy, there were 151 Pokemons, if you use a glitch to catch Mew. He was also given away as prizes and for attending Pokemon tournaments.

Then in Pokemon Silver and Gold, another 100 Pokemons were introduced. That brings the total to 251 Pokemons.

Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby introduced another 135 Pokemons, which brings the total to 386.

When Diamond and Pearl comes out, there's going to be another 107 Pokemons, so that brings the total to 493.

There are currently 387 Pokemon in the national Pokedex including the newest member, Lucario. However in Monday's new episode, a new Pokemon is introduced to us. So I think there will always be new species to be disovered kind of like in the real world of animals. But to answer your question: currently there are 387 Pokemon
