What is the 3-second violation in basketball?

Wikipedia and other sites keep mentioning a free-throw lane, but I don't know what that is.

The 3-second foul occurs when an offensive teammate has the ball and is in the "lane" (the shaded area between the goal and the free-throw line) for more than 3 seconds.
