Not knowing where you are coming or exactly which Redwood Forest you want it is a bit hard to give you specifics.

If you are talking about Sequoia NP in California you need to get to CA-99 from where ever you are starting from. This is in Central CA. From there you would have to cross over to the coast and get up to San Francisco. There is also Muir Woods just north of San Francisco.

Between SF and Oregon 101 is more scenic, but Crater Lake in is actually closer to I-5.

I would suggest looking at Mapquest to get an exact route of how to go between the places.

highway 1 is awesome not only do i drive it every time i travel north (I'm in los angeles) but i often get the urge to hitch hike the last time i did was 4th of July weekend 2 yrs ago it was great the redwood are FANTASTIC as is the Oregon coast but i think crater lake is inland off of Interstate 5 but if there is snow it is a must see detour.. just gorgeous.
Have fun drive safe

Well, I think your choices are actually I-5 or Route 101, which is the coast highway. I'd take the coast highway, but the coast has just been pounded by monster storms and is suffering power outages and downed trees, etc. You might want to wait a couple days.

Definitely 1, although 101 is also scenic but no ocean views. I've done both.
