As one of my professors joked, "Everyone was walking around saying, 'Isn't it dark?'"

Seriously, it's a misnomer. The "Middle Ages" or "Medieval period" was a time of great advances in many areas. It was once thought that compared to the Greek and Roman era before it and the Renaissance after that it was a period of ignorance, superstition, and oppression. Medieval scholars will argue that point, and the term "Dark Ages" is not used much anymore.

It really is a fascinating period of world history, and well worth studying!

Because someone left the bard door open and the wind blew out the candles...

Every group of humans has its 'ups' and 'downs', and in this case it was Europe plunging into nearly 600 years of 'darkness'.

This was essentially a 'feeling' more than anything else, but does point to the fact that Rome was gone.

The light that Rome spread out may have been an oppressive one, but it certainly was 'impressive' as well as 'oppressive'.

The Middle Ages were dangerous.Dangers included disease such as the Black Death, which killed about one quarter of Europe's population. Wars were frequent, as powerful rulers attempted to extent their territories. Punishment for disobeying the Church were severe, and included being burnt at the stake. Other painful punishments included whippings, hangings, beheadings, severing of ears and hands, sitting in the stocks, etc. However there were creative times ; some of Europe's most magnificent cathedrals were built in praise of God in this period of history.
