to do what is right - with your head held high - despite the pressures to do otherwise

I think of it as the phenomenon of someone going through something terrible and not acting out. Like, if someone's parents died and they started treating everyone horribly and turned alcoholic and just went totally off the deep end, they'd be normal. If they handled it with dignity, they'd keep calm and collected and not start any bad habits. That's what I think of it meaning, anyway.

To me, dignity is having freedom of choice, and by extension, the appreciation that I have freedom of choice.

Which means, whenever I am faced with any circumstance in any space and time, I get to recognise that I can choose my reaction, and this is the source of dignity itself for me personally.

If you compare this with being unable to recognize that you choose your reaction to any particular circumstance, you will understand what I mean.

Self respect first. When you know who YOU are and can appreciate that, a sense of dignity colors whatever you do. You can easily respect others, listen to them, and get their respect because you already have your own.

To be treated as every other person is treated. Don't talk down to me. Don't yell at me--especially in front of others. Don't make me feel as if I were stupid, because I am not.

My boss does not know the meaning of treating someone with dignity.

It means to have character. I don't do what other people do just because it's popular. I do things I feel are right.
