This 'freeze' renders the notebook useless except when the power switch is used to reboot the system. How can i solve this problem without rebooting the system on a constant basis?

could be a failing hard drive.
If it's over 3 years old it's probably the case. If not make sure you do all you windows updates and use Mozilla Firefox; i've heard the new IE7 doing that.

First try scanning it for virusses and spy-ware with an update to date scanner. If that does not work use disk cleanup in system tools. If these options do not work do a full system recovery. Someway a full system recovery does not work it is probably your harddrive is failing or your ram is failing. Most common problem might your ram has failed, the same had failed on one of my dell system's earlier this year.

- Are you sure your RAM is not overloaded?
- Try removing wallpaper and set screensaver to none.
- Reduce startup to programs necessary for daily work.
- Keep files to 20 pages. Separate chapters into different files if necessary.
- Run a disk cleanup, scandisk, then defrag.

Would be interested in knowing if this helps.

Send it back to Dell. I bought an Inspiron 600 from them last year and within weeks it wouldn't even start up....turns out they only gave me half the memory it needed!

Do you have virus protection? If not, you may have a virus.

If you do, have you done maintenance? If not, do a scan disk with the automatic fix problems checked.
Then so a system defrag. That should fix it.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
