I think it is a great book, though the friend that gave me the book thought it was boring.
(Which is why she gave it to me in the first place.)
If you are also considering going to see the movie too, I suggest that you read through the book a bit before you do.

It was one of the best books I have read in a long time, and the same goes for Eldest. I will warn you, the begining of Eragon is a little dull, because it has to set up the story, but when it gets going, it gets going and doesn't stop. I would highly recommend both books. I'm going crazy because I have to wait for the third book now! No other series has ever made me impatient like this, so yeah, read Eragon and Eldest.

I'm an old lady, but I love a good adventure/fantasy book. I loved Eragon, it was a little slow in spots, but a good story.

Sometimes if in doubt, you may want to read reviews about the text. They review for you and me
These book and movie review links may help you make up your mind:

I thought is was good :D.
most people think it's a dorky book and while might be,
it widened my vocabulary and was a good read. :D
I'd also go and buy Eldest, the second one.

Check it out from your local library--it's free. If you like the book, then you can purchase it.
