Right - the previous answerers had great responses. It is very much about government control of society by surveillance. But, more specifically, it also raises questions such as:

- How theoretically effective can any government/organization be at controlling its constituents' minds (another person can always _watch_ what you're doing, but how can s/he actually know what you're thinking, get inside your head, or catch your subversive thoughts; and if someone can't catch your subversive thoughts, s/he can't punish you for them)?
- To what extent is propaganda or information control (such as when Winston's government changes the news at its will and wipes out records of people who had lived to make it appear they hadn't lived) effective as mind control?
- Is it a type of insanity to be forced to do one thing or live one way and think another (similar to 'doublespeak')?
- Is it possible for one to be 'convinced,' to actually change his/her thoughts for pain or fear, through torture (by the end, for example, Winston seems to have utterly cracked after having a cage of rats stuck onto his head)? Is torture effective mind control?

You should watch the movie. It's kind of horrible (idea-wise) but good, like _Clockwork Orange_.

The story is about government control (Big brother is watching). Our society is letting government and special interest groups control our society by taking away our individual rights, one at a time, and if this continues it will be like the novel. big brother will always be watching and we will not have any individual rights left.
Orson Welles said "Todays fiction is tommorrows reality".

Complete government control over society.

Although the book was meant as a warning, the message went unheeded. Things aren't *quite* as bad now as they were portrayed in the book, but the similarities are haunting.

That is an amazing book if you can understand it. Try this website I think it will help.

If you read the book I think you will be knocked over by how relevant it is.
