NO, it will NOT hurt, since nowadays anesthesia is used, making the procedure easy, quick and virtually painless.

In addition to anesthesia, doctors don't use a scalpel any more, but a ring (Plastibell) or a metallic clamp (Gomco Clamp) which avoids bleeding and any accidental cut. They place the ring or the clamp on the foreskin, to press it and stop the blood flow, then they cut safely using the ring or clamp as a guide. The procedure lasts about 10 to 15 minutes.

I think it would cause trauma to his psyche. From what I know, it's the 8th day of life that a circumcision should be performed. I was explained to it like this- penile pain/touch receptors are not mature enough to feel the cutting. It is the 9th day in which the pain/touch receptors are fully functioning. Then why not on any of the previous days? The science is remarkable on this one-read close. Vitamin K (potassium) is essential to the production of platelets or blood clotting cells. This vitamin is a bi-product through digestion. By the 8th day, the colostrum is nearly gone and pure milk has come from the mother creating a spike in platelets, which makes the circumcision clot quickly. The part of the baby crying isn't pain, it's the whole being held securely as not to flinch. However, I've heard of babies getting through the whole briss sleeping!

I honestly think you should have a trained surgeon to do this procedure. They have access to anesthesia that would greatly reduce your child's trauma.

Hye. I have read all of the responses and I have to step out on a limb and disagree with them all. I am in the medical field. I know first hand the benefits of having a male circumcised... he will most likely thank you later! circumcisions were painful in the past. Any fool that thinks that the pain is worse for a older child/adult than a newborn is crazy!!! newborns feel pain toooooooo!!! anyway, the child will be fine. Ask the physician the give the baby a local injection of a pain reliever and he will be fine!!! it will benefit him in the long run and he will heal faster than you think. He will have some discomfort and he will need a pain med for a couple of days, but It wont hurt him as much as you think!!! good luck!!!!

Yes, it will be painful. The foreskin is rich in sensitive nerve endings (that make sex more enjoyable for uncircumcised men). The receptors on the inside of the foreskin are as sensitive as those on your finger tips. Plus, consider how badly it would burn when urinating after wards.

My son isn't circumcised... and I personally don't believe in making the decision to cut another persons genitalia... even for "religious reasons".

You just adopted this child and are in a position in which you should be trying to establish a solid relationship based upon trust. Taking him to the doctor to have an unnecessary, traumatic and painful procedure... is certainly not getting off on the right foot. I imagine that would crush the trust and sense of security in a 3 year old.

Just my opinion. It's a little TOO late to be circumcising.

P.S. Don't forcibly pull back the foreskin to wash him. Read up on how to take care of an uncircumcised penis. Basically you don't have to do anything special... just rinse the outside with water. Forcibly retracting the foreskin causes pain and scarring.

Yes, it will hurt more now then it would have when he was born. He should be back to normal in about a week to 2 weeks. Do you want to do this for medical reasons or just your preference. Personally at this age I would not have it done.

YES it will hurt!! As for how long, I have no idea. Probably until the wound has completely healed. This just sounds cruel.

If you wanted your son circumcised, it should have been taken care of by a trained surgeon shortly after birth. And, guess what, I would have hurt then as well.

If it is done correctly, no, he will not be in pain for long time. The reason it is done at birth, is because the nerve endings are still "immature" and therefore, the pain sensation is not as intense.

It's going to hurt no matter how old or young the kid is. But as to wether or not it will affect him health wise? Probly not. My brother had it done when he was 15. As long as the area is kept clean after he is cut he should be fine.
GOOD LUCK.

Of course it will hurt. Why would you want to do this to a little boy?
If he keeps getting infections under the foreskin then you might consider it.
Anyways, I've heard that it can hurt for about a week if he doesn't get an infection and heals up properly.
