Is this a skill a person can truly learn?

Some people are born with more natural musical ability than others.
However, it is indeed a skill that can be learned.

You can definitely learn. Some people it comes naturally to, but not me. I never sang a day in my life and I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket and now after a semester in choir I am one of the better singers.

To carry a tune? anyone can develop the skill, but to be able to sing like Barbara Streisand or Jelo, one must have the inherent talent that could be developed while one is still young. But one could always succeed in pursuing a skill or talent if one is persistent and determined enough.

Some are born with it whil others couldn't hope to carry a tune.
But i believe with a great deal of work and a good singing coach, anyone can sing. :D

A more accurate term is "matching pitch." In all my years of teaching singing, I have only had two students who really had difficulty matching pitch. If you hear a note and can sing it back, then you can "carry a tune".
Try taking some lessons, it can't hurt!

Good question. I can play any instrument with strings on it. The guitar, the piano, banjo, violin....etc. But! I cant sing. Music is inside you. I guess you can learn to play or sing...but if it is not inside you (in your soul) then you may be better off just listening to it and not trying to play or sing it. Since you ask that question, I am guessing that you have music inside you and you just need a confident boost to take it forward. Sing your heart out. You have the desire to make music......so make it.

Most people can eventually get it, but it comes more natural for some than others. Some people can draw what they see better than others. Some people can put their thoughts into words better than others. These things are a combination of genetics, training, desire and practice.

Sure you can learn it! Try putting your finger over one ear. Its easier to hear yourself.
