You must have half thought this childs fairytale out before asking your question so I took 2 minutes and looked it up for you.

Are Santa's Reindeer Male or Female?

Male reindeer generally shed their antlers long before December 25, whereas the females retain theirs until at least January. The reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh are always show as having antlers, so Santa's reindeer must all be females.

Santa also has special bulls (males) which are used for breeding purposes. These reindeer are not used for flying the sleigh, only for breeding.

To answer your question in my opinion alone; I would not have a problem with it either way because it is a classic fairytale that is passed down from parent to child for many years. Why should anyone question that?

Who says they're all bucks? I've never come across an authoritative source claiming that they are.

The word 'vixen' is the term used for a female fox. Would you give a buck a name like that?

BTW, no, I don't find it sexist or insulting. When it comes to breeding animals, such as horses or reindeer, it is mostly the males that are given the potentially dangerous work, while the females are kept safe so that the line won't die out.

During WWII, the mares and foals of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna were caught behind enemy lines after Austria was liberated by the Allied troops. Thanks to General Patton, who was a horse lover, the mares were rescued, with the result that the 400 year old Lippizaner tradition continues to this day. The Hungarian Riding School wasn't so lucky. Hungry Russian troops slaughtered the mares for food. With no breeding stock, the line died out, and the Hungarian Riding School no longer exists.

It is highly doubtful that all of Santa's reindeer were males. Vixen is the name of a female fox; would you name a buck with a girls name?
Then, of course most male reindeer lose their antlers by december, so while they could still be male, the odds favor mixed sexes.
As regards your second question; no, I do not find it insulting. The story of St Nick and his reindeer was written in an age with strongly defined gender roles, so naturally the story reflects that.

Santa cannot be bothered with many female reindeer taking time off for pregnancy. He cannot hault delivery of the toys for a bathroom break. He cannot deal with moody reindeer for 5 days out of the month. Of course this is a general statement and there are exceptions. Vixen may be truly independent or a lesbian and that's why he finds her reliable.

lol actually both male and female have antlers, but if I was a reindeer I'd be happy to let the men go out into the cold and drag some fat guy around on a sleigh all night!

This was sent to me via email:
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting
Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should've known... ONLY women would be able to drag a man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

Well--there seems some controversy about when males & females lose their antlers, but Dawn G made a good point! Can you imagine what some people HERE would say about a guy named "Vixen" or "Prancer?" Good lord, we're talking about (where are my italics?) reindeer here! Whos' being sexest? Plus very, very, silly!

you know, nothing ever actually said they are all bucks.
only hollywood showed the reindeer with antlers, but there's no 'santa' bible...
so who knows?
besides, they have to be all men. that's why noone's ever had a reindeer come and ask for directions :)

They're not. Vixen is a girl's name. (Female fox). And only Cupid (Roman god of love) is specifically a boy's name. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Comet, Donner and Blitzen all can be used for either. Of course, that latecomer, Rudolph, is a guy!
Both male and female reindeer have antlers.
