Yes your PS2 games will play on it as well as the PS1 games if you have them. The system is okay.... it is noisy just like the 360. But to make up for it, it has awesome graphics with a Blu Ray player included in the 60gb package which is retailed for the Blu Ray DVD player by itself is one thousand dollars so you are saving money. As long as he has a HDTV this is a great gift.

Most of the ps2 games will play on the ps3. There are some technical issues with some of the games but they should be releasing an update to fix the issue in the near future.
The ps3 is not designed poorly but production was rushed and there is the risk in buying the first release of any console system of that system having "bugs" more so with the PS3 since the production schedule was rushed, but I dont think that there are any significant quality issues.
Is the ps3 worth all the money? That depends if you really want a blue ray player now and you have an HDTV. If you don't meet either of those conditions then I would say no. Also keep in mind you can buy an xbox 360 for less and have enough left over to buy an additional controller and game. Or the wii and be able to buy several games and controllers before touching the 600 price tag. But really it depends on what your child wants.

ok here are your answers:
1) no. the ps3 is totally backwards compatible, meaning he can play all of his ps2 and even ps1 games on it with no drawbacks.
2)see answer 1
3) The ps3 is worth the cost for what it is. you get a game system with the best graphics, the newest high definition movie player, and other things. even you can use it to watch movies
4) ps3's are NOT designed poorly. the people that complained about them probably are either overly picky or have a defective model (which happens to every batch of new game consoles, and will be replaced for free if it happens)
hope i helped!

Yes most of his ps2 games will work on it. You don't need an HD t.v for the ps3 but it won't look as good (just in case you were wondering).

Wait and don't spend $600 on your kids. Teach them the true meaning of Christmas. If they really want it that bad, buy them $200 worth of Best Buy gift cards and make them save up.
The First Gen PS3s do have production problems, that is why they only released 200,000 units in the US.

hey lady, i have the PS3 and i can tell u that is definetly worth the $. the system is actually extremely quiet so i don't know what Nick S is talking about. so far there hasn't been a major complaint on the system itself so most of them don't have bugs if they would of had problems, you woul have seen it all over the internet( i know 5 other people who have one and they haven't had any problems). it's just another XBOX rumor. 90% of the PS1 and PS2 games work on the PS3. lady, please visit this website

I personally think PS3 is way expensive... If i were to buy a PS3, i would definelty wait a year... because they get the bugs out and most likely not have problems.
