Yes, I'm sure you as a guitar player appreciated tabs when learning to play the guitar. However, they are not how you're supposed to write down music: Notes, that might have the achords written above the note/notes, is the way to go. (Like D minor "Dm", C Sharp "C#" and so on).
Bottom-line: Guitar tabs are great for guitarists and even bassists, but they are a real headache for other musicians (like piano players: You have to count the strings, and know which tone they represent, in order to know which key the paper sppose you should push...)
Hated? I don't know actually — I do know all my previous and current guitar players appreciate them, they're easy finds on the Web... But octaves, scales and tones are important, too: Learn how to read them, you'll thank yourself. Even if you're currently on the guitar and finds the guitar tabs handy. ;-)

Because you are limiting yourself to tab. I learned to read music, I can play anything kind music on the guitar. Why do that?

i like tabs too. maybe some die-hard guitarists think it's cheating or taking the easy way out, but some ppl learn to play better using tabs, no big whoop...it's the end result that counts.
