recut the bottom of the tree at a slant, it will then be able to "drink", absorb water.

you just got it today and the weather were you are has it been nice and the ground unfrozen? the tree may have been well watered and it is not dry. I do not think you should worry if it isonly day one.
If it does not start drinking hate to say you may have to recut the bottom and make sure the base is clear from the prevoius cut.

You have to cut another couple of inches off of the bottom, even if it was just cut that day. The sap will plug the end grain and try to heal the cut.

How do you know it isn't drinking water? You just put it up today. They don't lap it up like a dog, you know. It takes time.

first, why are you using hot water? cool water is better. if the tree is standing straight up the bottom of the trunk is resting and blocking the trunk to suck up the water. you have to cut across the bottom of the trunk - on an angle. you have to prop the trunk up so the water can be sucked up the trunk. you do this with fresh cut flowers, too.
