An upconversion DVD player uses a scaler processor to upscale a standard DVD resolution (720x480) to a high definition resolution 720p (1280x720) or 1080i (1920x1080).

While on paper it sounds great, in reality its really marketing hype. Any time you upconvert an image or video signal, you are going to get severe video artifacts. A high definition signal that you see on a BluRay, HD-DVD or HD TV station is significantly better than the image that you see out of an upconverting DVD player.

If someone is looking for a new DVD player, then go ahead and buy one of these new upconverting DVD players. But, if you already have a progressive DVD player with component out, don't waste our money in buying an upconverting DVD player. You will be extremely disappointed.

An upconversion dvd player uses a special type of cable called
HDMI cable. This is a complete digital transfer from your dvd player to your high def TV. Most up convert dvd players can convert signals upto 1080i.

Upconversion DVD players use an HDMI cable to connect to your TV. The player "fills in" the missing info in the video data by guessing what color should go there. I have seen them in stores , and they work great!!!
