I think it's when you don't get me a gift for Valentine's Day and I respond by telling your mother in a crowded restaurant that you're gay.

I could bore you with a quotation from one of the many studies done on Social Anxiety, but in layman's terms it would be best described as an inexplicable, and irrational fear of being in any social situation (i.e. parties, crowded buses, job interviews, etc.) The individual who suffers from this affliction will experience anxiety symptoms ranging anywhere from nervousness and physical tremors to shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, sweating, paranoia and so on. The anxiety may be triggered by the feeling that the individual must present a certain behavior to avoid "embarrassing" themselves by "saying the wrong thing" or "behaving in an inappropriate manner". The individual may feel as if everyone around them is paying total attention to everything they say and do.
