This is tough not knowing the ages of your children. Or if they are boys/girls. And how much money you are willing to spend.
I think the best thing to do is pay attention when they are in stores. With commercials it is easy for them to say "I want that!!" I love to take my children down the toy isle near Christmas and birthdays. They might say they want something...but really seeing their reactions as they play or just admire it on the store shelf is more accurate I have found...
My girls (7,6,4) are all really into the Littlest Pet Shop toys. So we bought a bunch of that this year for all of them. Just adding to the collection they have been building for a couple years now. These toys are also great because they keep coming up with new and different ones. And it seems like children all ages really like them.
I also got them some books they have been wanting.
And some play make up. With girls you can not go wrong with things like that!!! Walmart has some GREAT little make up pieces that you can put together inexpensive and even some little kits that are fairly inexpensive and great for little girls. Also the two older ones are very into the bath stuff (bubbles, gels, salts, lotions etc) this year. Walmart and Target also have those very inexpensive.
Bratz and My Scene dolls are both very popular.
There is so much I can not even think of half the things I bought. Or that they wanted!!!
Oh my two oldest also said the Easy Bake oven was a must have this year!!!
My little guy (2) was a bit easier. It seems the older they get the tougher!!! He is very into the Cars movie so that was an easy theme to base his gifts this year. Cars EVERYTHING LOL!!!
And V-smiles
We also make it a tradition to get the children at least one outfit to unwrap. Its not as much fun but they still love it!

Well, I find getting it done early is the best way. :P Rather than Walden, you'll get more bang for your buck going to a second-hand store or used book store. I've gotten books in new condition. I mean NEW. Never been opened board books for babies, never opened fairy tale books are easy to find, etc. (the parents got two at a party for instance, or our local Walden and other book sellers actually have give aways for childrens books so you buy your normal books and they let you pick one of 5 books they donate to the secondhand store.) If you start now, you should be able to gather quite a few before Christmas season, and they'll look in new condition. I just know that $20 will get you maybe 3 books at the normal store, but will get you close to 10 new books at my local second-hand. Halloween is going on right now. You can find really cute costumes after Halloween is over for cheap, like $5-7 easy. Frogs, doggy, cat, fire-person, police-person, princess, lion... And you KNOW how much this age-range loves to play dress-up. Walk the 'discount' area of your local stores. Learn where they are and continue walking them. Before Thanksgiving hits, they're going to clear out half of their toy section for the new "black friday" sales and the Christmas push. You can find everything from children's games, to strange items. Doing this... I've got a CD player for each of my nieces this year, a collection of preschool cars for my nephew, a collection of hand-puppets for another one... the CD players were the cheapest. They're Spongebob and I caught a sale where they were $6 a piece (normally $30.) The cars, he's getting like 7 little cars, spent less than $10. The puppets I found at Costco for $8. In the past I've found an "annoying Frog" and "M&M" toy that were also radio receivers, plenty of musical instruments, games like Hi Ho Cherry-O and even things like science kits, play-doh fun, or child cooking kits. Growing up, I had 9 nieces and nephews, and very little cash. I could usually find them all something neat for under $5 a piece. Now I have great-nieces and nephews and I do the same for them. The best time to start is right after Christmas, and then through the year. :P Make a 'gift closet' in your house where you store things (I also buy birthday type presents as well and keep them in there, since I never seem able to keep track of their birthdays and it saves me money.) Hope this helped. I know I didn't give "ideas" as much as where to look, but I keep an open mind and find things that work is better than trying to make a rigid list.

That's pretty open-ended...really depends on the age and gender of the child. Try going to toysrus.com or amazon.com and using the "gift finder" tool - which looks by age, gender, and general interest (sports, dolls, etc). It gave me lots of ideas, even though I bought most items in different stores.

NOT clothes.
It depends on age group.
Nowadays kids like videogames but I suggest getting them something where they are not sitting infront of a TV or computer.
A Music instrument, even if its a cheap one. or something artistic.
If they collect something or like action figures or dolls get something like that! If its a girl and they have Barbies or something get thems ome barbie cltohes or something like that.
Little toddlers are easy, pick up something with alot of buttons and noises and their happy :P
Little boys like cars most the time. Firetrucks that have those buttons that have sirens on them.
It only seems hard but its easy once yuo get 2 nephews and a neice :P
Good luck!

How about if you just hold and hug them and say "I love you" and if they don't accept it and cherish it, well...perhaps these children are already conditioned, destroyed, like millions of other ch ildren into thinking that they need a material gift. Bah, humbug

My teenagers love gift cards....Barnes & Noble, Best Buy....I think they like to choose things themselves and gives them something to do during the holiday break from school.
