Other wireless providers seem to have unsecure signals...but it's easy for me to pick up their signals. Am I risking my laptop? What do I need to securely surf the net wirelessly when I am on the go without risking myself and without signing any contracts. Is it possible to connect to a printer wirelessly and retrieve documents,..how?.....sorry I need some wireless education.

You can connect printers wirelessly if you have a bluetooth or infrared connection.

You would pretty much have to have some kind of contract because you would have to set up a secure connection which you don't have by using someone else's network. Most people do not know how to crack your computer if you are using their network but some do and can get any of your information you have on your computer. I don't worry so much about it myself becuase like I said most people don't know how to do that and don't even know that you are connected through their network. I'm sure a person or two has used my network and I have no clue who, when, or how they did. To connect to a printer you need to purchase a wireless printer device. You can get one through any computer store and they have pretty easy directions that most of the time work well. It is good to have someone else come hook it up for you if you have the money to do so because someone that knows what they are doing can be more efficient in doing it. It would save you a lot of time and confusion in some cases.

If you have a wireless internet adapter, you can try to connect through someone elses wireless network. If you're close enough to get a good signal and they don't have WEP set up, you should have no problem getting on.
As for other people telling you that you are risking viruses and such, don't worry. Most new operating systems come with firewalls and usually people who are connected to the internet and have a wireless network set up in their home will have a firewall set up anyway. You will be protected by their firewall.

What you are doing is generally called warring.

Your laptop is able to see the signal being broadcast by the wireless router of one of your neighbors.

Technically it is stealing, but there is that camp that says if they don't know how to configure it ...

ANY connection to the internet risks your laptop to viruses and trojans.

The best thing you can do is keep back ups of all the documents, music, etc you want to keep so that you can periodically reload your OS and applications.

Hope this helps a bit.

best,

Obviously one of your neighbors has unsecured wireless.
you need a firewall and anivirus. I like to use Zone alarm firewall and AVG Free anivirus. just search for Free agv download on google or some thing. avg is one of the best free anivirus protection software there is.
But don't get mcafee or norton. they cost a bundle and slow your computer down. they hurt more than help in my experience.
Norton does work though, and mcafee does not.
And don't do any buying or personal stuff on unsafe wireless connections. always asume some one is watching you, they can take your credit card number.

I would suggest that you shouldn't use there wireless networks because one of my nieghbors was using(you can say steal because they cracked my password) my wireless network and I was able to get access to there computer by sending a signal to there computer. But it seems that they dont have clue that others have access to there network.

an unsecure connection means anyone can be connected. you simply need a firewall on your computer along with anivirus and anti spyware programs which you should have if you re online anyway.
