I am reposting this question, using a different site. Last time the best answer was "it's a woman thing". I think there is a scientific reason for some of the differences between men and women. Often due to the traditional responsibilies had by prehistoric peoples.
Is screaming a "new" thing, asked to older women, who remember their parents and family of previous generation? Is it just something allowed now to get attention and relieve stress, or to annoy others "because we can".
I think there's a real sociological reason tracable back, does anyone have an opinion?
BTW, I know this isn't some earthshattering breakthrough in knowledge, just a question.
****And for that nasty Englishwoman, it probably has nothing to do with scratching one's balls in public, or your smelly feet.

So sorry, left off very important part of question. Not a scream of terror, or pain or fear. A scream of joy, or squeal of joy. The one ladies do when they all meet and are happy and for no reason scream. It isn't something unusual! it happens all the time, and the question is legitimate, but those who can't answer and must attack the asker out of ignorance or plain stupidity, have at it.

I wonder if Cory W hasn't hit on it, TV and movies for this type expression of happiness. Do any more mature ladies remember this happening so much when they were younger?

scream, and others will hear it and others will come, usually.
This question confuses me though, what kind of scream are you talking about? is it the squealing type scream when they're massively excited, or the frightful scream when they think they're in danger? Either of them are fairly explainable, the excited scream because people on tv do it, their friends learn to do it, and it's some way to let out some way their overjoyed, while most guys just simply gawk and imagine. The danger one I explained up top :)

I don't know who the women you know are, but the ones I know (including myself) just don't scream.
I do know that I would use screaming if I were being attacked because 1) it could attract attention and 2) there's the chance it could actually drive someone/something away. It would not be some kind of automatic and emotional response, though. The use of the loudest, highest pitch scream I could come up with would be a conscious and planned strategy if that were my only "weapon".

You're probably right about screaming being a woman thing. Men are much less likely to call for help, which is what a scream is for. Witness how difficult it is to get a man to see a doctor or go for counseling. Men are much more solitary and much less apt to call for help. Women are more social and calling for help is in their nature.

I have a question for your question: Where are you, that women tend to scream a lot to cause you to ask such thing? Perhaps if women scream more in your area, you have to ask yourself what might be causing this?
If they scream while being beaten, that would explain why they're screaming; If they scream whilst being annoyed or frustrated, it's because they're releasing frustration; if they're screaming while having sex, they're either hurting or in extreme ecstasy; or if they're screaming while giving birth, it's because it hurts to do so. You have to write down all possibilities as to why women are screaming...
To scream in pain, is perfectly natural for anyone. To scream in pleasure, is also perfectly natural. There are a number of reasons why they may be screaming: they may be hurt; they may be frustrated; annoyed; etc. Perhaps you should perform your own scientific study.
Do a survey or something, instead of just posting questions in different areas until your satisfied that women may be just crazy or something. There's a more logical reason as to why she may be screaming. Perhaps she's locked up somewhere, who knows? Have you investigated? :p

Think about it. As hunters men had to use logic and strength to feed the family. As nurturers, women had to use communication and feelings to satisfy the needs of the family. As time progressed, women grew better vocal cords than men. Even studies today say the average man uses about 7000 words/day while the average woman uses about 20,000/day.
If you doubt this, next argument you get in with a woman see who lasts longer. Women usually get the last word, lol.

Screaming is the last thing you want someone to do when you are tracking and stalking prey. You're buddies will beat you up if you blow the hunt.
Wild berries, however, do not get frightened away.
Still, I think it's cultural, based on the fact that women can hunt and kill and stalk (with proper training) without losing their cool, and many men will yell and scream when startled --- welcome to the world of combat women and metro-sexual men. When I was a kid, all the men were brave and stoic, and all the women fainted when the monster showed up.
