Reduce the number of applications running in the backround.

1.Goto start-->run-->type "msconfig" (no quotes) then press OK.
2.Goto the Startup tab and uncheck anything you dont need. You can uncheck them all.
3.Restart you Laptop.

It may also be time to add more memory to you Laptop. Goto Crucial.com if you need to do that.

With a laptop it's possible you've been putting it into hibernation and never really shutting it down. Do a proper shutdown & restart via the Start button and see what that does for you.

If that doesn't work, try increasing the size of your paging file. Instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417

It sounds like at one time it did play dvd's. So something is using your RAM that was not before.
Look at what background programs are running. Be sure you do not have spyware running.
You can add more RAM, but these should help.

buy it - there should be a bit on the underside to fit the RAM,

alternatively - close all the icons you can that are beside the clock on the bottom right and remove any programs you don't use

hope it helps
