Modulator Demodulator.

Computer signals (0 and 1) are modulated so that they can be transported over a telephone network using different frequencies. Example, for 0 transmit 1000 Hertz tone, for 1 transmit 2000 Hertz tone. At the other end of the phone connection, the demodulator part recognizes these tones, and translates them back into 0 and 1. This is done because a telephone connection cannot transmit zeros and ones.

This is only the concept; in reality it is much more complicated than what I just explained.
