It is not safe to burn coal in a stove designed to have wood burned in it. Coal burns at a significantly higher temperature than wood. The metal used in a coal stove is able to withstand the higher temperatures. You might get away with it a few times, but eventually you will face damage to your wood stove, if not actual disaster.

Good luck with your wood burning stove this heating season.

coal should not be used as it burns at a higher temp than most woods...reason...the interior of the stove ,mainly the grateing system will not with stand higher temps for very long and will burn out and need replacing more often than using wood, however if one would use coal only periodically in small amounts the grating system probably would withstand the added temperature but for a shorter life span ,other than that there wouldnt be any harm to other parts of the stove or chimmney.

Some can, some can't. If it doesn't say so on the stove, check with the manufacturer. Coal burns hotter than wood.

Yes. Just be careful that the pipe doesn't get too hot, if it turns red, don't add any more coal. We usually burn only wood though, I hate the smell of burning coal. Keep a fire extinguisher handy too, if you don't have one already. Make sure the pipe stays clean too. Also, if you don't have one, get a carbon monoxide detector Iyou can find them at hardware stores), we have one and it's gone off several times.

only if its just a small chunk at a time. if you just throw in a pile of coal and set it on fire that would be bad for the stove. if you have wood and put a peice of coal in with it thats ok.

"jhat' gave you the best answer. Coal burns hotter and woodburners have chimneys designed for wood. You should also have a chimney sweep clean and check the chimney yearly.
