i received rebate checks for some items i bought and was out of town when they arrived in the mail. since returning, they EXPIRED! i mean, they have a "void after XX date" printed on them and its after that date now.

do you know what the laws are around this type of issue, particularly in california? is there anything i can do to get a new check or somehow cash them in? thanks!

I worked at two different banks and I would encounter this situation many times. First of all, the bank teller is generally too busy to check the date of the check or the "void if not cashed by" date. The teller's main job is to check the amount of the check, the routing number, and to look for a signature. So, the bank shouldn't give you any trouble. If they do, just ask them to deposit it anyway.

Checks become stale-dated after 6 months according to uniform commercial code. So, if your rebate check is within those 6 months, it's still good.

if they are printed with "void after XX date" the bank won't cash them now, so your best bet is to contact the company and ask if they can replace them for you.

About all you can do is contact them and explain that you were not at fault. I'll bet you won't get anywhere though.
