I've been playing the clarinet for a while and it has turned out to be a fun and pretty instrument. The hardest part in playing the clarinet is probably articulation or "tonguing". I have difficulty with those but there are some exercises you can do to remedy that problem. The easiest part of playing the clarinet is probably learning fingerings because they do not differentiate very much. I f you decide to play I would get a nice clarinet like the Buffet R13, but if that is not possible contact your nearest music store for used instruments. Also if you buy supplies like reeds get size 2 and a half to start with and get Vandoren because that is the best brand. A good site for clarinet acessories is www.musiciansfriend.com. And the thumb rest might hurt your thumb so cut about a third of a pencil gripper and slip it over the thumb rest for a nice cushion. I have used these and they work great.

I played the clarinet back when I was in junior high/high school! The clarinet is a very easy instrument to start off with. Most of the fingering for the notes are in order (there aren't a lot of crazy fingerings for basic notes) and it's just really fun to play. Make sure you start off with a low numbered reed (a 1 or a 2). the number represents the thickness of the reed and therefore how easy or hard it is to play with that reed. A hard part of playing the clarinet are hitting those high notes. Hitting a good high note usually requires a thicker reed...usually the thinner reeds have a weird sound when you're trying to hit high notes. Also, you may find the clarinet "squeaks" a lot when you're trying to hit certain notes, especially the high notes. Don't get discouraged! you'll hit these with the right amount of practice! I really don't know what else to tell you. It's a fun instrument and it sounds pretty cool...I loved it! Good luck with the clarinet and make sure you clean it after every use!

clarinet? wouldn't you rather play a trumpet. You would get a blast out of it.(pun intended.) ;-P
I learned to play the scales on my sister's clarinet, it's not that bad. I'm sure you will have fun. Enjoy yourself and PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! That was one problem I had with learning to play an instrument. You should pracitce NO less than a half hour a day 5 days a week outside of class. If you want to be good, you'll need to practice more. The hardest part for me in playing an instrument was keeping time. Some people have that, and some people don't. I also remember something about needing reeds because the ones she had had split.

I played clarinet from 4-8th grade and the hardest part was concerts when playing from a long time it would be hard for me to keep my lips on the mouthpiece cause it would hurt so much. The easiest part was that to play most or all of the notes was just lifting your fingers. Make sure you have lip balm or chapstick because it's hard without it. HTH *hope that helps*

The claranet is a very easy instrument to play. The hardest part is when you first start playing, and you play for awhile, your cheeks will hurt a little bit.
A personal tip would be to use a soft reed(the little wooden thing on the mouth piece) for your first few months of playing.A 1 1/2 should be good.
