Sometimes we issue too many commands too quickly and the PC gets confused. When this happens to me, I free memory by shutting down, then turning off power at the surge protector. Wait a minute, then power on. Try again.

right click the file. Copy the name and do a search in all files. Start>Search
You may have to delete a file associated with it in order to delete the file. You can also see if it show's up in add/remove programs.

Perform a 'Clean Boot' of Windows and you should then be able to remove the file as whatever is using it will most likely be disabled. Below is a link for the Microsoft instructions on how to clean boot a Windows XP machine. Instructions for other operating systems are available as well.

I have a couple of answers for you, depending on what the file is. I use McAfee for my security on one of my PC's. You can go to their site and tell them the file and ask how to get rid of it. For instance, there is a lot of adware out there that makes it very difficult to get rid of. Also, you can search the Internet, not just your PC, for the file. A lot of people out there, who are VERY anti-adware,etc., actually have sites devoted to this type of thing, and lastly, there are several "free" programs available that will let you drag, drop and shred just about anything. Over the years, I've found a lot of irritable files that are difficult to get rid of, but none have been impossible.
