Why does my hard drive sound so loud? I regularly clear out overything. I defragment about once a week. I HATE that sound. It is so annoying. It makes me think something is wrong with my pc? Is there?

If you have a really big tower hard drive, it may be the high speed drive you have. My own hard drive sounds like a jet engine every time I burn a DVD on it!
I don't think that a little fan could really make that much noise unless it is very old or possibly damaged or may be of the wrong type (wrong voltage).

My old imac made a lot of noise whenever it got booted up or turned the screen on. In that case, it was actually the CRT tube making all those sounds!

Other than that, your computer seems pretty normal. I have been around a lot of high end computers and they have all been very noisy!

Hello there
1st of all you should not defrag your hard drive once a week, not good for it. Find your disk defragmenter and click on analyze and it will tell you if you have to defrag or not! Maybe once a month. It could be your hard drive is going but also check your power supply the one in the back of your computer that has a fan in it. The power supply can make alot of noise!

There are only two things not counting a CD/DVD drive that make that kind of noise. The Hard Drive or the Fans!

If it is the Hard Drive as you suggested in your question then start downloading all your files and everything you want to save "RIGHT NOW!!!. Once the Bering starts to go there's nothing you can do........but replace the hard drive - - once the Bering seizes up everything on the drive is lost - unless you wish to spend thousands to reclaim it.

i have a HP buisness desktop in a tower case it used to sound like it was taking off cos it has a variable speed cpu fan but iv had it appart n the fan assembly is set with a gav from the heatsync so ineffciently pulling air around the cpu heatsync i cut some rubber bike innertube up and used it to fill the gap so it has to pull the air through the heatsync its quiet as a mouse now. loads more efficient. you could get a water cooling system which i believe are totally silent for about £50 GBP.

IF your harddrive is old and has always been making that noise i would not worry about it. however if it did not make this noise when you first got it, i would buy a new harddrive and transfer all your files. I have had harddrives that make noise and they can go bad. Also, if your not sure its your hard drive its probably a fan with worm out bearings.
There is nothing you can do to fix the noise from your hard drive except buy a new one.

Seems your hard drive is being used for a long time. This is the right time for you to think changing it. It may crash any time and will give you a lot of pain of loosing data. So back up it right now and think of purchasing another.

uncertain what it may be yet one section to make sure is the Sounds and Audio instruments under administration Panel. look under the Sounds tab and spot in case you have a scheme that have "plane" sounds in it.
