plug it in, open iTunes, go to the iPod settings, and press "Restore" all the songs will be out of your iPod, but you wont't lose them.

Plug your iPod in, select it, and when the songs that are on the iPod come up, uncheck the little box next to the name of the song. This will keep them in the library, but will not delete them overall.
