New Year's in California is just another day passing people by. In the Philippines, New Year's Day is a celebration! All the families (especially the kids in tow) visiting relatives or friends. The food! The sights and sounds (and first class Christmas decorations!). And last but not the least, the fireworks! No matter the person's means, he will have enough to buy fireworks for arrival of New Year's Day!

New Years celebration in the Philippines is like the 4th of July in every household. Everyone tries to out do each other by having the loudest firecracker. Some can already trigger car alarms. It can get suffocating because of smoke produced by firecrackers. Unfortunately this is also the time hospitals are busy due of firecracker injuries.
This practice of using firecrackers was taken from the Chinese who believe firecrackers remove bad luck and evil spirits.

Fireworks here are 100x bigger than in California. It lasts for about 3 hours non stop!.
Plus, where else in the world can you find policemen, soldiers firing their guns indiscriminately during New year? Only in the Philippines.
