I've decided certain gift cards are much better and safer... If the cash or a gift card to a store like Best Buy (I know from personal experience) gets lost in the mail or stolen... you'll never be able to get it back. My bank is offering Visa gift cards you can personalize them and even put the persons name on the card so ID is required. Is you purchase them online from my bank its 5.50 per card and they personalize it however you want AND mail it to the person for you. But if you buy it at the bank its only 1.50 per card but it doesnt have the persons name on it and you have to mail it urself. If the card is lost or stolen all you have to do is call the 800 # cancel the card n they will reissue a new one, free of charge. You can add any amount you like as well, even 9.99 and they dont expire for 2 years and theres no amount taken away if you dont use it up quickly... Credit Card Gift cards are the best way to go in my opinion!

Some places you can buy higher value gift cards at a discount. The local grocery store chain does that. Actually, you get fuel perks where you can get 20 cents a gallon off for every card you purchase. When you go to Costco you can buy a cinema gift card for cheaper than what it's worth at the theatre.

Honestly though I think the real reason people get them is they don't want to seem completely thoughtless by giving cash so they get a gift card instead to seem like they put some effort into it.

That's true, all though some people like to give gift cards to specific places to show that they really were thinking about the recipient while trying to find an appropriate gift; sometimes giving cash is just too impersonal.

A gift card is kind of more of a personal gift rather than just cash.

But when you have "a certain gift-item" in mind, a gift card would be more poinient.
As an example; You are planning to gift your intended with [a specific gift item], then a gift card (with an encoded notation) would be AN ULTIMATE GIFT.
CA$H seems so impersonal, but more practical.
It is in end YOUR CHOICE.

I know people who will spend money on practical things if they receive it, because if they don't they feel bad for wasting it. If they get gift cards they can buy themselves a nice present without feeling guilty.

It just shows a little more effort in gift giving.

It shows them that you know the type of stuff that they might want to get. It's more thoughtful or something...albeit barely.
