Personally, I would go with one pearl gourami rather than two dwarves. A pearl will be less agressive and a lot more beautiful, but it will also be more fragile than the dwarves. Dwarves really aren't that fragile, provided you keep your tank parameters correct (no ammonia and nitrites, low nitrates), and your other fish would appreciate this as well. But, most dwarf gouramis that are sold in pet stores are male (if it has bright pretty colors, it is male... and even though the "powdered blue" aren't bright, they are also male). The females aren't very pretty. But, the only way you can keep two is to have two females or one male and one female, because having just two males would usually result in the dominant male picking on the smaller male until he is sick or dead. This will happen with most other gourami species as well. You can usually manage 3 or more males okay with a large enough aquarium (20+ gallons) provided you have enough space on the bioload (i.e. you don't have too many other kinds of fish). FYI, blue gouramis, gold gouramis, and opaline gouramis are the same species (three spots) and are all pretty aggressive. One pearl gourami, one male betta, or a group of small schooling fish like three cory catfish (really fun, and will add movement to the bottom level of your aquarium) would be my suggestions.

i have two dwarf gouramis and tones of other fish in a 55+ gallon tank and they fight all the time. They have fought over sides of the fish tank and now the red one has the right side and the blue one has the left side. so to feed them you have to put food on seperate sides. and they allways go on the other gouramis side and then start fighting again. But gouramis can also be peacefull, so id maybe ask the dude at the petstore, and if he/she says no just get another fish.

Personally I find dwarf gouramis to be very timid, and not very hardy. 2 can be troublesome, as they will often fight each other a bit. (When they aren't hiding from everyrone else.) Male female pairs work great, but few store sell the more drab females. Given enoug cover they will be fine, but I wouldn't put more than one per 5 gallons long term.

Pearl gourami are more hardy, less aggressive toward their fellows, and are active inquisitive fish. They will grow to 4 inches, and do better in male female pairs. (But they really don't fight much compared to most gouramis.) Females have rounded dorsal (top) fins.

First, How big is your tank?
I think two Dwarf Gouramies be fine. You should add more Glowlight Tetra because thay are schooling fish

They are horrible fish if you are a beginner, from my experience I could get none to live, my angels live, but not them... they are really weak, but, they are beautiful fish, if you tank is big enough, get some blue or gold gouramis, they get to 4 in, remember, I have 2 gold and 1 blue in my 44 gallon.

To you other question: Platies are nice colorful fish, and have babies often (my favorite part...)
