Every so-called universal tow bar that I see on the market requires you to drill holes and permanently attach brackets to the bumper of the vehicle being towed. I am looking for a tow bar that can be clamped on to any steel bumper. I remember when U-Haul would rent that type many years ago and I recall other places that would sell something similar. Nobody seems to have one anywhere!

All modern bupers areen bolted to the car or truck, so the clamp on hitch would come off, with the bumper!

The bumpers are mounted on posts squeezed into larger posts, with a tube of hard rubber between. That makes them absorb impacts upto 5Mph. But, they can just as easily pull entirely out!

Most truck frames have predrilled holes, where the brackets are mounted, underneath, for the towbar to be connected.

If you aren't a mechanical engineer, you really don't want to try to create some 'quick solution' to your 'problem'!

Depending on what part of the country you live in, some U Haul dealers have the clamp on tow bars and are willing to sell some of their older ones. I have also seen them in the smaller truck or trailer rental dealers. Make some phone calls to some of them and you'll find one. good luck
