If they have a busy lifestyle and don't have the time to take care of exterior maintenance. A town home with monthly assessment fees can provide for this. Town homes are sometimes ( but not always) less expensive than a single family residence. If you can take care of outside maintenance or hire someone to do that for you, it's usually better to buy a house and the house can be less expensive if you add up the monthly assessment costs you would be paying to live in a town home. (If you can afford the monthly assesment... Why not add that to your home monthly payment and get a better home.... As a side note... Homes normally appreciate in value more than town homes ( and someday you will want to move and get another home). Let's face it .. No mater what you buy the location is usually the most important factor.

Town houses are usually cheaper. Basically, they are zero lot line houses that are all stuck together. Town houses usually have two floors, and may or may not have a small yard or garden area. People like them because they can be found in the city, when bigger houses cannot. They can also be a cheaper alternative to regular houses. Sometimes there is a housing association that pays for outside maintenance, so they are a popular choice among people who don't want to be bothered with things such as lawn maintenance, roof repair, and such.

I own a home, my friend owns a townhouse. He has literally no maintainence i.e yard work, exterior painting as that was included in the purchase by the developer, his energy bills also seem to be less than mine as he is in the middle of the complex and has only two walls exposed to the elements. The cons are that sometimes he can hear the neighbors next door and can hear their toilet flush lol. His little fenced in yard is rather small if wanting to have an outside BBQ and there are parking issues. I rather own the home, although a wee bit more costly and time consuming as far as maint goes, but I have space and freedom to do what I want. And if you want kids and a dog , you will want a big yard.

The real answer is usually price. Town homes are cheaper than comparable detached homes in the same location.

A townhouse is usually something you rent, but if you want to buy it, it is usually more expensive than a house, depending on the size.

because they are idiots and do not know how to do anything, it is a lot easier to call a superintendent to fix something then do it yourself
