Give them a card that says you'll take them to a nice dinner when you get back on your feet. If they're a true friend they'll more than understand. If they're not.... screw 'em.

HE/she is your friend? Then why buy anything. Isnt your friendship enough? Will he/she not understand that? Or, don't you understand it? IF they are your friend, they won't want a gift.
Or, if they base friendship on the expense of a gift....lol.....they weren't really your friend. Who needs them/him/her?

You don't "NEED" to buy your friend anything if you don't have $50.
You might WANT to do that, but you don't NEED to do it.
If you're that broke, you CERTAINLY don't "NEED" to buy anyone anything!!!
