Any number base n has n symbols from 0 to n-1, so in base 8 only the digits 0 thru 7 exist. Each position from right to left represents another power of 8 in this case, so the number 7777 in base 8 means 7 1's + 7 8's + 7 64's + 7 512's. The next base 8 number after 7777 is 10,000, or 4096 in base 10.
