Best way to send any plant is bare root. Wrap the roots in moist paper towels and wrap the paper-toweled roots in a baggie. Tape the baggie close (gently) at the top of the roots to keep moisture inside. The lay in a box cushioned with packing peanuts or newspaper. You can send a pot along with the plant and the new owner will pot it up.

You can also send the plant all potted up but that's more difficult. You'll have to figure out some way to keep the soil in the pot...one way is by using plastic wrap and taping it over the soil in the pot. (leave a slit for the plant's stem and leaves to stick out of the pot, of course)
Secure the plant in a box with packing peanuts or shredded newspaper and write in BIG letters "THIS SIDE UP" and "FRAGILE". Of course that doesn't guarantee your plant will make it in great condition but it will help.

Best way to send a plant though is bare root.

tie a plastic bag around the base of the plant to keep the dirt in, and ship it in a small shoebox, or appropriate size with newspaper to hold it in place.
