Bernard Herrman, who scored the theme to "Vertigo" (1958) with Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. One of the most stunning pieces of film music ever imho!! Especially the Tristan und Isolde theme in the hotel sequence. Awesome!!

John Williams and Howard Shore. John Williams was responsible for many themes that have entered into Americana (the Star Wars theme song, Jaws, Indiana Jones). Howard Shore's music for the Lord of the Rings series and King Kong was simply astounding, especially the one for The Fellowship of the Ring. Danny Elfman is okay, although he doesn't really compare.

John Williams (Superman (1978), all of the Star Wars films, E.T., the Indiana Jones films, Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, J.F.K., The Sugarland Express, Schindler's List, Home Alone, Saving Private Ryan, Born On The Fourth Of July, and more.)

His music is so richly textured and affecting. It stays with you as much as the film itself.

John Williams. He has such an extenisve career and has done musical scores for a lot of my favorite movies; Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Memoirs of a Geisha, etc. The scores are diffrent and are varied and are good, even twenty years after they were first recorded.

John Williams- simply the best. He has made so many musical themes and they are recognized instantly. Like Star Wars or Jaws. I consider him the top composer for the last three decades. =)

Hans Zimmer is my current favorite. He did the soundtracks to "The Rock," "Gladiator", "Pirates of the Caribbean," "King Arthur," and "The Last Samurai". He's a great composer with very powerful, moving themes to his music.
