Simple. A round soup spoon fits your lips better, gives more surface area so you can smell it better.
Oval spoons have a tendency to push on your lips and is not suitable for sippin'....It's more for putting in your mouth, but upside down. Go fish!!

Soup spoons are larger and round so you can actually take some soup from the bowl to your mouth. You can accomplish this with a teaspoon, but you'd probably have a problem with soups that contained veggies and chicken or beef chucks. The teaspoon is too small to be practical. Eating a bowl of any soup with a teaspoon would take an eternity compared to the time you'd need if using a soup spoon. The shape of the soup spoon also reduces the spills and splashes you get when the broth of the soup you're eating spills over the edge of the smaller teaspoon.

Hi Arkle !!!
Soup spoons are round because they collect more liquids !!!!
If you try to eat soup with a dessert spoon, is going to take you more time trying to collect the liquid broth into the oval spoon.
Plus you will have more soup on you that in your mouth !!!
Dessert spoons, are more stylish, because they can distinguish them fro others spoons. Also they could be oval because, desserts are mostly of hard consistency.
Either way, as long as you have a concave utensil to eat your soup, you should not worry about the shape.
You just have to have more patience to eat it, and if is good is worth the trouble. DON"T YOU THINK ??? Enjoy !!!! YUMMY !!!
GOD BLESS YOU
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

That's because soup is a liquid and most desserts aren't. With a round spoon it might make it more efficient to eat .

Your soup spoon has to be round so you can get more soup in.If you used an oval one the soup would spill over the edge. You can also slurp better if the spoon is round.

despite the fact that there's an excellent answer above me, i'm still going to go ahead and say that it's only so the spoon looks different.
the reason there are so many spoons and forks is NOT so that you can eat with proper ettiquitte or whatever, it's to embarass people that don't know the difference.
i don't like soup spoons, give me a tablespoon or a dessert spoon instead!

a dessert spoon is oval so you can use it as a mini knife for breaking the pudding, whereas the rounded soup spoon is more like a ladle

As other people have already observed, the shape and size of a soup spoon suits the purpose.

I find them awkward, I use a dessert spoon for soup or tablespoon.
I'm glad I dont sit next to you bigdog - if I heard someone sipping their soup for the duration of a large bowl of soup i'd go mental lol :-)

A gentleman would rather starve than eat soup with a desert spoon. The very idea of it sends a shiver down my spine.
