L1: 4y = 5x + 2 or y = 1.25x + .5
L2: y = 2x -10
Step 1: Find the intercection.
At the intercection, y is the same for both lines.
If a = b, and b = c, then a = c; thus:
1.25x + .5 = 2x -10
10.5 = .75x
14 = x
If x = 14, then y = 2x - 10 = 28 - 10 = 18.
Intersection = (14,18)
Step 2: Given 2 points, find the equation of the line.
c says that the x intercept is 4. At the x intercept, y = 0, so your first point is (4,0). The second is the intersection at (14,18)
2a.) Find slope (rise/run)
rise: 18 - 0 = 18
run: 14 - 4 = 10
-----------------------
Slope: 1.8
2b.) Find y intercept:
Given the slope (1.8), and the intersection (14,18), at x = 0, y can be found by reversing the slope formula:
rise / run = 1.8
18 - y / (14 - 0 = 14) = 1.8
18 - y = 1.8 * 14 = 25.2
y = 18 - 25.2
y = -7.2
line in slope intercept form: y = 1.8x - 7.2
Check:
y = 1.8x - 7.2
18 = 1.8 * 14 - 7.2 = 18 (check!)
0 = 1.8 * 4 - 7.2 = 0 (check!)
