I stupidly followed a link to a site named edonkey.com (don't click on the link just yet!). When I went there, it said something about not downloading music, and it showed my IP address and said that it has been logged. What exactly does that mean? I occasionally downloaded some files, none of them illegal, but is someone now watching my computer? Is it legal to log IP addresses? Am I over reacting, or should I be scared? What can I do?

Is it legal? Yes. It is quite easy to log someone's IP address. In fact, your IP address can be retrieved from your e-mails. When you search using any of the popular search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo!, MSN...etc.) they also log your IP address. Your IP address is pretty much available whenever you are on the Internet. Should you be scared? Not really. As long as you do not engage in any illegal activity.

EVERY website knows your ip address. ANywhere you connect your pc to will log your ip as a visitor. Don't worry about it unless you downloaded/executed software from them.

Also, make sure you have some sort of virus protection AND firewall. They will shield you from attacks and malicious viruses.
