Being a retired mental health professional with 20+ years of diagnosing mental illnesses and personality disorders and chemical dependencies, etc., let me tell you that all dianoses come from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), in whichever version they're using at the time, and "warning signs" or what they call "diagnostic criteria" are presented in each section prior to the actual diagnoses. You can find the DSM in any library or bookstore, or maybe even on-line. Oh, and be aware that they differentiate between "mental illness" and "mental disorder", the latter not being a mental illness. God Bless you.

Which Mental illness are you referring to?
Tin foil hats and talking trees or not being able to get out of bed for 2 weeks and crying a lot?
Fuges and blackouts?
Drug addiction and or alcholisim?
Flash backs from an abusive relationship or Vietnam?
You really have to be more specific.

Mentally ill misconstrue your intentions...they dont respond normally to negative or positive treatment. They are often paranoid.
You could be nice and they think you are being mean, or the opposite.
