I can't believe some of the answers to this questions, why do you make it so confusing. It's simple.
In the NHL:
The regulation time of a game is 60 minutes, broken down into three, 20 minute periods. With stoppage time (like when there is a face-off, penalty, fight, commercial, etc.) each period last about 40 minutes of real time.
There are two intermissions (one between the first and second period and one between the second and third period), these make up for an even 40 minutes.
If the teams are tied, there is overtime. In the NHL thats 5 minutes of 4-on-4 play, which takes about 10 minutes of real time with all of the stopapges.
Now if the game is tied after that, there is a shootout, which takes about another 10 real minutes (this part of the game is not timed).
You will never see a regular season NHL game go longer than 3 hours. Most of the time you are looking at two and a half hours, but some games go really quickly and can be over in about 2 hours.
So, 2-3 hours, but most often an NHL game is 2.5 hours.
(In previous years, games took a lot longer because players used to take their sweet time to get back to the face-off circle. I think two years ago, they introduced the "hurry-up faceoff" and it took about 20 minutes off the total time.)

A professional hockey game is comprised of three 20 minute portions called periods. There are short breaks in between periods for the ice to be resurfaced and the players to get a little breather. The duration of a game from start to finish varies but usually lasts somewhere between 2 1/2 and 3 hours.

There are 3 periods in Hockey. Each period is 20 minuntes. You also have 17 minunte intermissions between each period. If the game were to go into sudden-death overtime it would be an additional 5 minuntes. A game in Final with no overtime will last 111 minuntes or 2 hours and 25 minuntes. That is not counting the time in between plays and delays!

Ethan T>>>> after regulation it goes to a 4 on 4 five minute overtime not 20 minutes.
3 periods of 20 minutes which is 60 minutes then about 1 15 minute break between periods. so now your at about 105 minutes. then if its a tie then they go to a 4 on 4 five minute overtime which they get about another 5 minute rest before the overtime, so know your time is up to about 120 minutes. if the game is still tied after overtime then we go to shoot out which takes about a 5 minutes break then the shoot out last about another 5 to 7 minutes so now your time would be up to about 132 minutes of actually playing time almost. and with all the stoppages and penalties that happen throughout the entire game you can give it another good 20 to 25 minutes. so you would be looking at about 2hrs and 27 minutes.
this might be a little confusing but i hope it helps. lol
lcayote>>> i don't think they had an NHL game last over the 3hrs mark in the past 3 years, thats why the game and rules changed cause allot of games before would last over the 3hrs mark, and the games where just to long.

If things go smoothly? (it never does!) 3 X 20 minutes playing time on the clock. Plus 2 X 15 minutes intermission = 90 minutes.
However the game being what it is you can count on 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
