The best Christmas presents I ever got were the year after my divorce when my kids worked at their grandparent's house to make money to buy me some stuff from the dollar store. I got artificial flowers, a vase, a cross necklace, and some christmas ornaments and a wall plaque saying Merry Christmas. Those gifts meant the most to me of any I have ever received. A couple of years later while moving there was a fire in my U-Haul and I cried so hard as those gifts my children had given me burnt up. I wasn't worried about my gold and diamond jewelry or any of my household items---I lost more than half of mine and my two kid's belongings in that fire.
Losing those presents hurt so much more than anything else in my life has because my children were only 8 and 10 and took it upon themselves to work for some money to buy me some presents. The cross necklace did make it through the fire and I still have it and my children are now 22 and 20.

But their love and hard work gave me the best presents I have ever received and they didn't spend more than $5.00 each.
