The closest thing you could get to a 'starter dog' would be an old dog from a shelter who is already trained. You wouldn't have to do much work to train it, it wouldn't need as much attention, and since it's old it would probably only live a couple more years. But don't think of any dog that you get as a 'starter dog' because even if it's a very old dog you'll still own it a few years.

Or heck, a RoboPuppy.

A good first dog? Go to the shelter and find a full grown adult dog that's not too big (under 40 pounds). Make sure he or she is healthy, friendly, and will let you roll him or her over without complaint. Pick a dog that gets along well with other dogs, too. An adult dog will be much easier to housebreak, and should already be over the puppy chewing stage, where they feel the need to chew everything within reach. With an older dog, you can usually trust them to have free run of your house, and you can leave them outside for a time if need be.
If you have your heart set on a puppy, pick a lab mix, as long as you are willing to exercise him or her regularly. Labs are good all around dogs, and they don't tend to get aggressive or dominant with their owners.
Hope this helps!

you need to get a dog that fits your life style. If you're relatively inactive, you don't want a dog that needs to be walked for an hour twice a day. Same for the reverse. If you want a dog to jog with you, you need an active dog that can keep up, not one that is lazy or prone to respiratory problems. Also take into account if you have kids or plan to in the near future. Many small breeds are very jealous of anyone else getting "their" attention, whereas many larger breeds help watch kids and are protective.

I had never owned a dog until just recently. I didn't think I had the time and patience it would take to train a puppy so I adopted a 2 year old german shepherd from my local animal shelter. That was the best decision I've made in a long time. Not only did I save him from possibly being put down but he was already fully trained. He has been a great addition to my family. If you have a shelter in your area, I would definitely suggest checking it out.

What do you mean a starter dog ? A dog is a commitment of years and years . If you are looking for one that is housebroke and had some training then go to the shelter and look for one .

There are no "starter" dogs. A dog is forever - for the rest of the dog's life.

Dogs from the Humane Society are good dogs that need homes.

well i would look at the humane society first, and see if there is anything you like there, and then if not, then take a dog breed quiz...just type in like what's the right dog for me into google or yahoo search and it should come up with something. And then if that doesn't work then just look at the dogs you think are cute and do research and work from there.

Well, a good dog that doesn't have too many health problems and has generally good behavior is the golden retriever (or anything in the retriever family), calm dogs basically. Do not get chihuahas, terriers (I have a fox terrier), or any wild dog with behavioral problems (like mine). Good luck!

well it depends on the type of breed you want. if you want a small, med, or large breed. but the best breed to start with is the golden retriever because they are the best dog for a family with kids. i breed them and they are great. they are very easy to train and are very devoted to the family. i would say get a golden retriever you won't be sorry for the choice you make, you will be very pleased with the breed. good luck.

Boston terriers are wonderful. They're small, short haired, barely shed, and very loyal. I've had a lot of dogs and I've found the Bostons to be the most enjoyable.
