Simply take a cotton cleaning cloth, get it wet, wring out, and apply some food safe cleaner (such as vinegar) to the cloth. Gently wipe top, sides and bottom of microwave with cloth, just to get them damp. Lay the cloth in the microwave, set it for 30 seconds. Do not open the door when the timer sounds, but leave it about 5 minutes with the door closed.

When you open the door, finish cleaning the microwave as you normally would, and the smell should be gone.
