Her original name was Frances Ethel Gumm and she got her start in show business as part of a sister act named the Gumm sisters. They worked as part of a vaudeville act with George Jessel who suggsted changing the name Gumm to Garland, for what should be obvious reasons. Frances renamed herself Judy after a popular song of the time.

Judy Garland's name was Frances Gumm and she sang with her sisters in a group called the Gumm Sisters. At a vaudeville appearance they were erroneously listed on the theater as the Glum Sisters. That was really the final straw. Georgie Jessel who was appearing at the same theater suggested the Garland Sisters (after a famous theater critic in New York named Robert Garland) and Judy picked her first name because it was a popular song at the time and she liked the name.
